Put Your Heart in Your Story; Media Training Tips That Will Make You to Shine

As leaders, we're often called to step into the spotlight, whether on stage, on screen, or in the boardroom. But what does it really take to shine in those moments?

At our recent EGN Virtual Event, I had the honour of hosting a powerful session with former CNBC News Anchor, Lisa Oake, titled:
“Put Your Heart in Your Story – Media Training Tips That Will Make You Shine.”

Having spent years in front of the camera—hosting national TV shows, receiving eight Panasonic Gobel Awards, and speaking globally—I know that presence isn’t about performance. It’s about connection.

Here are some key insights Lisa shared with our EGN leaders:

1. Tell Stories, Not Sales Pitches
Drop the script. Real experiences, genuine emotion, and purposeful storytelling are what move people and build trust.

2. Your Body Is Part of the Message
Leadership presence goes beyond words. Open posture, calm energy, and intentional movement reinforce credibility and confidence.

3. Turn Nerves Into Fuel
Pre-performance nerves are a sign you care. Channel that energy to focus your message and elevate your delivery.

A few personal techniques I’ve used over the years:

  • Speak to the camera as if addressing one person

  • Take a breath before you begin and visualise impact

  • Let purpose—not perfection—guide your message

The leadership shift we need
In a world driven by information, it's those who communicate with heart, clarity, and intention who truly stand out. Executive presence isn't about being flawless—it’s about being real.
